Week 5 2008: Colin Cowherd’s Wheel of Genius NCAA Football Picks

Colin went 1-3 last week and is now 11-7-1 on the season. we mean no disrespect to The Herd, we know he is capable of some awesome weeks and we also know he is capable of lying about his results. He said he was 11-4-2 last week when he was really 10-4-1. We intentionally list all of his picks so you can see for yourself.

The Herd’s Wheel of Genius picks of the week are:

TCU (+18) at Oklahoma – TCU won 5 of last 6 vs. Big 12 and is 11-2 in their last 13 versus BCS schools. TCU D is a beast and is ranked #1. Oklahoma wins but TCU will play very hard. Score prediction Oklahoma 28 – TCU 17

Miss St. at LSU (-23.5) – There is one thing that is certain and that is LUS blows out Miss. St. Every year. Score prediction is LSU 30 and Miss. St. 0

Alabama at Georgia (-7) – Georgia is wearing black but that could work against them. Georgia also has the best QB between the two teams. Bama has two advantages. 1) They are 4-0 with 4 easy wins so they did not reveal their playbook and 2) they are 9-9 on 3rd down conversions of two yards or less. Saban never loses by 7 points or more. Score prediction is Georgia 23 – Alabama 20

Purdue at Notre Dame (-1) – Notre Dame faced no crime in losing at Michigan State. Young offense plays different home versus away. Purdue really means Purdon’t in big games. Score prediction is Notre Dame 28 – Purdue 20.

Illinois at Penn State (-16) – Illinois has a bad defense and really bad pass D. This is a revenge game for Penn State. Penn State starts fast and this will make Illinois get down and the game will get out of control. Penn State wins 36-14.

This is not a Wheel of Genius pick but he threw it in as another game. Said Ohio State will destroy Minnesota.

Week 5 NCAA Picks: Runny’s Revenge!!!!

Tough start to the week for me with two losses on Thursday night. USC completely self-destructed and flushed any national championship hopes down the drain. Tulane imploded as well. Freakin’ terrible.

As promised, here are my additional picks for the week:

Wisconsin @ Michigan (+6.5): No. 8 Wisconsin rolls into the Big House this week to face their first Big 10 test. Both teams are coming off rest. It should be a good game as these teams always play each other tough. I think Wisconsin covers in this one, but it will be close. The Big House, surprisingly, is not that big of a home field advantage. For that many fans you would think it would be insane. However, if the visitor gets on them early, it will be deadly and the crowd is gone. Facts: Wisconsin is 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 against Michigan and they are 8-2 as road favorites before back-to-back home games. There are impressive numbers that would suggest Michigan will win this game, but this is a new Michigan team. They do not have the players to run Rodriguez’s offense, and their D could not stop Notre Dame. That is huge. I like Wisconsin to ground-and-pound here and win by 7. Take Wisconsin -6.5.

Colorado @ FSU (-5.5): FSU lost their first game last week. It just so happened that it was the first good team they faced. They face another good one his week as the Buffs roll into town for a prime time game Saturday night. Which FSU team shows? I think it is the one that lost outright to Wake last weekend. I think they are posers and way too overrated. Colorado is not. They are getting better and better each week. I love their QB and they have better coaching right now. FACTS: Colorado is 11-2 in away games against opponents that are .600 % or better that are coming off of a straight-up, ATS loss the week before. That is FSU my friends. I’m rolling with the Buffs! Love the points, too. Take Colorado +5.5.

Illinois @ Penn State (-16): This games scares me a little because Penn State is rolling right now. They clearly are the cream of the Big 10 crop. They are destroying teams right now. Illinois has been inconsistent, mostly due to their QB play. Juice Williams is turning the ball over at an alarming rate. Very scary for the fans down in Champaign. However, they are coming off of rest this week, and they beat Penn State outright almost a year ago to the day. Facts: Illinois is 7-1 ATS as double digit Dogs off of straight-up wins, Penn State is 1-3 ATS in their last 4 against Illinois (1-3 ATS in their last 4 at home, too) and they are 0-5 ATS against conference teams they lost to the year before after they play a non-conference game. The numbers point to Illinois. I think the logic does, too. They held Missouri within 10 earlier in the season. Penn State has similar explosiveness. I think Illinois can keep it close. I’m taking the Fighting Illini +16.

There you go. Three more picks. Also, we have a new contributor. His name is BSL and he is an expert on all things SEC. He posted his SEC picks in another post.

As always, good luck with your picks.

Week 5 NCAA Free Football Picks (9/27/2008): Introducing the Backwoods Southern Lawyer, AKA SEC Genius!!!

Flash and Runny have reached out to another guest writer. Mr. SEC lawyer as we named him is picking at an 80% clip for SEC games. He told us not to bet the Miss St./Auburn game, he told us not to bet the Georgia/South Carolina game and he has been dead spot on all year. Well Mr. SEC Lawyer has agreed to guest post for us and he will now be referred to as BSL or Backwoods Southern Lawyer. BSL loves NCAA football, specifically SEC football. He lives and breathes SEC football and we have found him to have the best pick ideas related to SEC football in the country. We are privileged to serve as his voice.

From BSL:

I believe it was Reba McEntire who sang “Don’t trust your soul to no backwoods Southern Lawyer”, but my faithful clients can trust their dollars and be well rewarded. The verdict is in — yours truly is a blistering 80% on SEC games in September and back with more winners this week. Have you or your pocketbook been injured by college football misfires? Well, strap on your neckbrace, stick with me and we’ll laugh all the way to the bank.

Be forewarned. Runny and Flash have crunched the numbers eight ways to Sunday; they work a reliable system and grind out impressive results year after year. I’m more of a “feel” guy. I get my picks from having been born and raised 3 doors down from the gates of one of the premier SEC campuses (literally being able to hear the roar of the crowd from my room); from worshiping names like Herschel Walker and Bo Jackson and Archie Manning; from tailgates that start on Thursday; from being one fo the first ones in and the last to leave the stadium; and most importantly, from living and breathing SEC football for well nigh 30 years now. The law may be my profession, but SEC football is my passion, and I’m just here to share the love and — above all — I’m here to make a dollar and a cent in this business. So, without further ado, let’s get to the picks….

Call it the weekend of the home favorite in the SEC. With the exception of Ole Miss, that’s who I’m going with:

TAKE OLE MISS +22 AT FLORIDA. Houston Nutt knows how to get up for big games (i.e., Hogs upsetting LSU in last year’s regular season finale). Gators have been playing the offense playcalling close to the vest. Expect another vanilla showing and a 17-point Florida victory.

TAKE LSU -24 VS. MISS. ST. Auburn beats MSU by 1 point. The next week, LSU beats Auburn by 5 points. So, what does Vegas say — opening line is LSU over Miss St. by 24 points. They are on to something. For one reason or another, LSU owns Miss. St.– like 15 of the last 16 owns. And, lately, it hasn’t been close. The win over Auburn has got LSU primed for a big game, not a let down. If LSU gets up early, this one will not be within 5 touchdowns.

TAKE AUBURN -6.5 VS. TENNESSEE. The wheels are falling off Fulmer’s bus, which makes me question this pick because last year, just when you thought he was a beaten man, Tennessee went on a run and made it to the SEC Championship Game. HOWEVER, Tennessee just doesn’t have the dogs for this hunt. Auburn rolls in a low-scoring affair.

TAKE GEORGIA -6.5 VS. BAMA. Georgia was ranked number one to start the season for a reason. They are loaded and are going to make this a statement game at home. John Parker Wilson (or whatever his name is) is an average quarterback and will show it this weekend.

Enjoy the picks. I will be back next week for more action.

Yours truly,

BSL Esquire
