Dice-K – Where does he currently rank in 2007?

Since we have become enamored with the hype of Dice-K I thought it would be fun to point out where he stands presently as far as starting pitching ranking. Since the media and fans are quick to say that Dice-K is great and will be dominant in the U.S. I wanted to point out exactly how great he has been and how he compares to other super star pitchers.

According to Yahoo! fantasy baseball rankings, Dice-K is the 33rd rated starting pitcher. Dice K’s line = 14.0 IP, 1 W, 1 L, 14 Ks, a 2.57 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. So lets see how the greatness of Dice-K stacks up and lets see who is ranked higher than him so far this year. This way we can get a true sense of who he should not be compared to because they are clearly better pitchers based on their statistics year to date. I would state that the only true assessment of a pitcher in 2007 is his actual results and not some media/fan hype frenzy.

The rankings:
#30 – Superstar Josh Towers/Toronto Blue Jays – 13.1 IP, 1 W, 1 L, 10K, 2.02 ERA and 1.05 WHIP
#29 – Converted reliever to incredible starting pitcher, the one and only.. .Braden Looper/ St. Louis Cardinals – 19.0 IP, 2 W, 1 L, 9Ks, 2.37 ERA and 1.11 WHIP.
#25 – The phenom known as Tom Gorzelanny/Pittsburgh Pirates – 12.0 IP, 1 W, 0 L, 9Ks, 1.50 ERA and 1.00 WHIP
#19 – Mark “the cougar” Hendrickson/Los Angeles Dodgers – 11.0 IP, 0 W, 0 L, 11Ks, 1.64 ERA and 0.45 WHIP
#12 – Kip “I can’t believe I am pitching this” Wells/St. Louis Cardinals – 20.0 IP, 1 W, 2 L, 18 K, 2.25 ERA and 0.90 WHIP
#9 – No comment needed on this man (Runny’s favorite non-Cuban player) Ian Snell/Pittsburgh Pirates – 20.0 IP, 1 W, 1 L, 20Ks, 1.80 ERA and 0.95 WHIP
#3 – Rich “King of the” Hill/Chicago Cubs – 14.0 IP, 2 W, 0 L, 11Ks, 0.64 ERA and 0.57 WHIP
#1 – This comes as no surprise…Felix Hernandez – 17.0 IP, 2 W, 0 L, 18K, 0.00 ERA and 0.47 WHIP

Iti s not worth bringing up the following pitchers as a comparison because most logical baseball fans would assume they are initially better than Dice K:

#2 Beckett
#4 Hudson
#5 Peavy
#7 Harden
#10 Johan
#11 Verlander
#14 CC
#17 Halladay

Let’s seee if you can move up this list tonight Dice-K and I can not wait for your Sunday night start against the Yankees. Too bad Matsui is coming back on Monday and not Sunday night. Show us what you got!!!!

  1. Nice start. 4 IP, 77 pitches, 46 for strikes, 3 hits, 3 walks and 2ER. Dice-Kan I find the strike zone tonight is not looking so hot in start #3. He will be lucky to pitch two more innings.
